How to create your blog
Setting up your own blog website is easy. Here are some helpful tips:
- Set up your blog in seconds by clicking here or by clicking Create a New Blog on the home page. Name your blog (this is tagged at the end of the wordpress URL you see and becomes your main address).
- That’s it. You can change a few things such as the overall look (called a theme) by going to the Site Admin page (on the right under Meta). Just look under Design and select Themes. Find one you like, click on the image, and you’re set. Click Visit Site to see it in action.
- To post new content, you can either write a blogging post or pages. Pages can include static content that stays forever, such as an “About Me” page or a course syllabus (don’t worry, you can change them at any time). Posts include more up-to-date content that you contribute to your site.
- You can manage your posts and pages (update, delete, etc) by going to Site Admin > Manage > Posts/Pages. Remember to save changes before exiting the page.
- If your theme does not have a Site Admin button on the main page, then go to your website URL address and add “wp-admin” at the end. This will take you to the administrative screen where you can write new pages, posts, edit existing content, change themes, etc.
- You can post text, photos, mp3s, whatever, limited only by your storage limit (currently 2G) and upload size (currently 50M).
- That’s the gist of it. We’ll add links to people’s blogs as they get set up so you can see what others are doing. There is no official LVC tech support, though, so you’re on your own to work out the details. You’ll get a feel for it over time–it’s not that hard.
- Support documentation and forums are located at Wordpress.org. This is the software we’re using to host your blogs.
- Have fun!
